Fry Feeding Guide

Our Feeding Fry Guide

Hi Guys,

As i see recently there is a increase in new people coming into the betta world, i think that it will be good to put a guide on raising fry, though this can be found anywhere on the internet but just trying to help out by sharing my own methods, please those who are more experience can help to add in their views/opinions and comments. Thanks

After the eggs have hatched till the fry become free swimming which is about 2 days, leave the father inside to help out those that cant free swim. After your fry have started free swimming, take out your male before you start feeding as it can be quite a mess to take him out when there is alot of boon inside. (Do note take when taking out the male, take precaution as you may also get some of the fry in your net, so please do check)

Day 2- 1Week
Feeding of Boon
Boon is supposed to be better from what i feel, but in SG only certain LFS like C328, Polyart, Y934, some at serangoon north and etc.. carries boon. Also there are times when i head down to LFS to try to get boon, they are either sold out or they didnt have stock coming in on that day. So i would recommend that you have Liquidfry on standby. I would not recommend those dry food for fry as fry tend to eat mainly on live food. LFS sells boon at around $0.50 for quite a big packet, do not throw the whole packet in as it will cause your fry tank to stink and the water quality will be bad after all the left over boon dies.

1Week - 2Week
During this time, your fry will have gotten slightly more visible to you. A new possible food has been added to the food list. This is BBS (Baby Brine Shrimp).
Though boon would still be better, but as LFS may not always be able to get boon and boon is not easy to cultivate, BBS is a good alternative. You will have to start hatching BBS , there are many guides online to hatch BBS , do follow closely and there should not be a problem. BBS eggs can be bought from many LFS too.

2Week +
Around 3 Weeks, you should be able to see your fry clearly, fins are starting to become more obvious too. At this staged, i would recommend to feed chopped tubi and tubis to them. Chopped tubis are mainly for the smaller ones to eat. Tubis are good for making your fry grow faster but please do make sure that you rinse the tubi clean before feeding as there are many bacteria in the tubi worms. If you are unable to get tubis, i would recommend Atison betta pro pellets as their pellets are relatively smaller. This diet should stay the same till adults .

2 Months - 2.5 Months
The age where you should begin jarring. Depends on each person's view on when to jar and what to jar.

Cleaning the Fry Tank
I have heard some people using snails to upkeep the cleaniness of the tank, so far i think only ramshorn is the only snail that is suitable, but do take note that ramshorn produces a sticky goo which i saw has made a few fry die after they were caught in it. I would not recommend snails but instead siphon the dead boon and whatever else that is causing the tank to be dirty. Do siphon the water into a clear tank first before you throw the dirty water away, this is so that you can check if you have siphoned any live fry so you can save them before they go down the sewers. After siphoning, please do add back aged water into the tank.

Many people do not clean the tank but instead after 1.5 weeks to 2 weeks, they will starting topping up aged water into the tank so as to make the water condition slightly better.

I would recommend the siphoning method as it makes the tank cleaner and clearer instead of the just topping up method.
